It all began in 1928, when Louis DeLea started a small sod farm in Greenlawn, Long Island. Back then, he would go to cow pastures and maintain the grass in exchange for harvesting it. An innovator in his own right, Louis DeLea was the first farmer to realize the idea of cultivated blue-grass sod. Little did he know that his excruciating work would ultimately grow DeLea Sod Farms into who we are today — one of the largest sod growers on the East Coast and the oldest active farm in the U.S. Proudly, DeLea Sod Farms is still owned and operated by the DeLea family. With every project and every customer, we honor Louis DeLea’s legacy and our family name.
